Krista Muir is a modern day troubadour. Armed with a baritone ukulele she travels from city to city singing all things – from anthemic Morther of Crowys to comedic Social Pariah, Muir brings light to health issues, heart issues and interstellar dreams. Krista Muir lives in a world of surrealism, cuckoo clocks and antique lampshades. Since the early 2000’s she has released seven full-length albums under her name or fauxvarian alter ego Lederhosen Lucil, numerous singles, toured internationally and performed at festivals like SXSW, Pop Montreal, The Ottawa Folk Festival, NXNE and CMJ.
At the heart of her multidisciplinary practice is storytelling through song. She discovered a love of baritone ukulele in 2005 after spending many years playing piano, keyboards, electric bass and singing in several groups. She never looked back.
Recent projects include composing music for interactive operetta Kit Operette (Gaité Lyrique, Paris, 2012), writing custom love songs for the Chanson-O-Gramme project (2013-2017), and creating a mini album of original bilingual lullabies for new parents entitled A Pocket Full of Lullabies (2015). She has studied with and performed alongside uke virtuoso James Hill, given songwriting workshops and collaborated several times with award winning filmmaker Kara Blake.
Muir was the inaugural artist-in-residence at Fisch Haus in 2016 (Wichita, KS) where she created a new community-based “song telling” performance where she serenaded beloved objects and the bearers of those objects were invited to tell their stories. Her residency at FL!GHT Gallery in 2017 (San Antonio, TX) allowed her to give performances, organize multidisciplinary events and collaborate with local artists to create new work and experience cultural exchange.
In January 2018, Muir released her 7th full-length baritone ukecentric album The Tides – a cathartic collection of misfit songs, many centering on her experience with the chronic illness endometriosis. Currently charting on the college radio charts and in rotation on the CBC, get ready for a lyrical, uplifting and playful serenade. Krista Muir sings all things!
